Choose the right food for you!

Choosing the right foods for you can be a daunting task. There are so many things to consider: GMO, Organic, Local and seasonality to name a few. It’s a common misconception that if your food is vegan, paleo or natural that means it’s healthy. In most cases this may be true but beware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing when it comes to food. There are a lot of them out there. Focus on the quality of your food and here are a few things I consider when at the grocery store.

Read the label, consider both the nutritional facts and the ingredient statement. Here’s a great link to help you decipher these labels and read between the lines. http://www.wikihow.com/Read-Nutrition-Facts-on-Food-Labels

Look for certifications like “USDA Organic” and “NON-GMO Project Verified”. Whether you agree with the position on these certifications or not, I can tell you that in order to display these logos on your product you have to follow guidelines and standards that other food manufacturers do not have to. There are inspections, processes and regulations that you are held accountable to and they are no joke.

Choose good fats! Not all fat is created equal, look for good sources of essential fatty acids like olive oil, avocado oil, nuts, seeds and legumes. Stay away from trans-fat and saturated fats.

Look at the protein content! Protein is essential to your body’s ability to build and repair muscle. This is especially important if you are an athlete or living an active life. Too much protein may be hard on your kidneys and not enough may be holding you back.

Stay away from added sugars like high fructose corn syrup. There are plenty of natural sweeteners out there. Too much sugar can cause a variety of problems including obesity, Diabetes and Heart Disease.
