Words of Wisdom
Every so often I like to read and re-read books that give a true message about health, within these books there is usually a good quote that stays with me because it makes the most sense and is truth. I thought I would share a couple of them here.
“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest her or his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”
–Thomas Edison, 1847-1931, America’s greatest inventive mind
Thomas Edison was a genius is more ways than one. He would, as they say “roll over in his grave” if he knew that the future doctors he wrote about were prescribing more medication than ever. Of course there still is a lot of future ahead of us, we will see. Fortunately there is an awakening as to the benefits of a plant based diet; unfortunately very few who would recommend this diet won’t have an M.D. after their name.
“Every patient carries her or his own doctor inside.”
–Albert Schweitzer, M.D., 1875-1965, Alsatian medical missionary, theologian and musician
Ah, good ole Albert Schweitzer really new the truth about the body in that basically one’s body is its own doctor.
Q: Who heals the cut on the skin? A: The healing mechanisms of the body.
Q: Who mends the broken bone? A: The healing powers from within one’s body.
Q: Who cures the cold? A: Once again, the healing abilities within one’s body.
I could go on and on how the body is constantly in repair mode even when we don’t think it is and many wise men have stressed the importance that we don’t lose sight of our wonderful self-healing body and if given proper nourishment will do it fast and efficiently. A fact that is worth noting is that you can’t drug your body back to health. The body heals itself in spite of the drugs not because of them.
Yes, there are some situations that require some help or comfort when sick or hurt like the setting of a bone or the stitching of a deep cut, it could even be a loving touch and some kind words when sick but ultimately the body does the healing. In other words what is needed is a care giver not a drug pusher.
Don’t get me wrong a good MD is needed for those super serious injuries beyond the scope of the average person but for the most part Americans have been trained to run to the doctor for everything under the sun when all that is needed is a little education on how to take care of the body properly through prevention and diet. Education is the best medicine against poor health.
